Lynching
Lynching
by Louis Lozowick
Before creating Lynching, Lozowick’s work had already been included in an anti-lynching show sponsored by the Communist Party of the USA (CPUSA). Lozowick continued his outrage with the intensely personal Lynching.
The twisted face of the lynched man is modeled from Lozowick’s own. As a Jewish man he was possibly referring to a commonality he felt with the prejudices experienced by blacks.
The detailed, individual features of the lynched man contrast sharply with the vague, looming shapes of the Klansmen in the background.
