Spanish Civil War

And Women Must Weep

by Rockwell Kent

This expressive and moving composition reflects the plight of women during war.

The face of this solitary female figure is hidden in shadow, but the attitude of her head and body tell us that she is grieving. What about her pose communicates her grief to you?

Behind the picket fence on her right, we see the back of a man carrying a rifle and backpack and walking away, presumably to war.
